In 2023, for its second year, the Résidence pro of Villa Medici welcomed 500 high school students from the Grand Est and Provence-Alpes-Côtes d’Azur regions!
The first edition of the Résidence Pro in a few figures :
Nearly 500 students and 62 teachers
12 schools from the Grand Est
12 young entrepreneurs from the Grand Est
12 public agricultural schools from the region Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur
24 collective works created by the students
2 x one-week residencies at Villa Medici in Rome
A team of 13 French-speaking mediators supervising the students
83 workshops, meetings and visits to Rome organised over two weeks
After a first edition carried out with the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region which allowed to welcome 300 students in residence at Villa Medici for a week in May 2022, the French Academy in Rome is joining forces this year with the Grand Est and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur regions (DRAAF and DRAC PACA).
Résidence Pro is doubling its numbers for this second edition, as Villa Medici will welcome nearly 500 high school students from 24 vocational colleges next spring, from 8 to 12 May 2023 for young people from the Grand Est Region, and from 15 to 18 May 2023 for those from Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
While the Neo-Aquitaine wood sector was the main theme of the 2021-2022 pilot edition, this year’s Résidence Pro covers a wider range of fields in order to explore all its technical, social, craft and artistic expressions: the beauty and wellness professions, the art professions such as glassmaking and textiles, the art of living sector with hotels, food and catering (Grand Est), as well as the lifestyle professions linked to nature and human beings, through the environment, sustainable development, landscaping or personal services (PACA).
The impulse of this new edition is also reflected in the renewed commitment of the Fondation BNP Paribas and Cartier, which have accompanied the programme since its first edition, as well as the Fondation Bettencourt Schueller, which is supporting the Résidence Pro 2022-2023 in order to develop awareness of the arts and crafts, a sector to which it has been committed for over 20 years.
Since the beginning of the 2022 academic year and throughout the year, the students and their teachers have been working in class on a material or immaterial work of their choice, linked to both Italian culture and their educational sector. The works chosen by the classes include the films of Federico Fellini, Roman fountains, gastronomy, ancient myths, the botanical garden of Rome, the baldachin of Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, and the frescoes of the Livia Villa in the Palazzo Massimo.
After eight months of research and group work at their school, the students will travel to Rome in May for a week’s residency at Villa Medici, with a tailor-made programme combining experimental workshops, meetings with professionals in their field and artists in residence, visits to the city around the works studied, and social events.
Connecting the fields of expertise in vocational training to the arts and culture of Europe, carrying out a joint cross-disciplinary project, giving students the tools to present their work and make their voices heard, arousing or reinforcing vocations, opening up new horizons through travel and the discovery of a place that welcomes the artists of a generation: here are the ambitions of this equal opportunity programme devised by Villa Medici in cooperation with its partners and educational teams.
In 2024, the third edition of Résidence Pro will be held from 13 to 16 May, once again with the Grand Est region: the Villa Medici will open its doors to several hundred more students on the theme: ‘The habitat of tomorrow: living well together, in a sustainable way’.
Calendar
The Résidence Pro, a three-part programme:
From September 2022 to May 2023
From the beginning of the school year, accompanied by the project’s educational teams and using a specially designed digital platform as resource, each participating class from the Grand Est and PACA regions design and document a joint project inspired by a major heritage work from Rome and Italian culture.
May 2023
The students are hosted for a week of immersion in Rome, with a programme of workshops, lectures and hands-on experiences organised at Villa Medici. This week is all about discovery, togetherness and exchange. During their week of exploration in the field, the students and apprentices also visit Roman sites that they have studied during the year and take part in workshops, not forgetting the various events taking place during the week.
Upon returning to France
The students share their experiences and become ambassadors for this unique programme within their school by sharing their adventure in a form of their choice. Screening, tasting, concert, workshop: each class organises a special event in their school.
As culture is essential to the intellectual and personal development of every young person, the Grand Est Region promotes through its youth and culture policies open-mindedness among high school students so that they become enlightened, curious and active citizens.
In this respect, the artistic and cultural education programme of the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici, is a prestigious lever to provide a unique experience for young people from the Grand Est who will participate in an enriching professional adventure.
Nearly 300 high school students from the Grand Est region, sponsored by 12 young entrepreneurs, will work throughout the academic year on this joint project combining all the historical skills of their region: glassmaking, crystal, wood, instrument making, stone, textiles, etc. They will present their masterpiece on the theme of “Art and the Art of Living” from 8 to 12 May 2023 in the heart of the Eternal City, cradle of culture, architecture and art.
This wonderful showcase promotes the emblematic crafts and sectors of excellence of the Grand Est. This residency supported by the Region illustrates its ambitious policy to bring to life its professional training, its land and its riches, which contribute to the region’s energy and influence.
The Grand Est Region will also organise an official launch day for the initiative on 14 November at the Centre Pompidou in Metz (57), in presence of Simon Garcia, Secretary General of the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici, and the Academy’s educational team.
The DRAAF and DRAC PACA
Launched by The French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici. the Résidence Pro programme is an innovative proposal strongly supported by the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC) of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. The DRAC and the Regional Directorate of Food, Agriculture and Forestry (DRAAF) have decided to put this idea into practice together to benefit agricultural students, through an operation as demanding as it is adapted to the objective of providing access to art and its history.
It is an initiative that fully meets the objectives of artistic education, which consists of encouraging all young people to participate in cultural life by acquiring knowledge, through a direct relationship with works of art, or by meeting artists and cultural professionals.
The 2022/2023 edition of the programme will also highlight the many assets of agricultural education, which provides training in more than 200 occupations related to life (environment, animals, agro-equipment, food, forestry, agriculture, water, land, personal services, trade, etc.). This Résidence Pro project will finally enable the work and the 12 “remarkable projects” carried out by the 300 students and teachers of the 12 public agricultural high schools in the PACA region, which offer fulfilling training courses to prepare them for jobs in a high-quality learning environment.
