Villa Medici is a historical palace of the 16th century located on the Pincio hill, in the heart of Rome, that decided to open its rooms to the public.
Seat of the French Academy in Rome from the XVIII century, Villa Medici is first of all a cultural institution, its core being the residency of fellows and the organisation of several cultural events such as exhibitions, conferences, festivals.
Villa Medici offers the opportunity to stay in its rooms following specific housing requirements.

Historical rooms

The historical rooms Galileo and Debussy are the old Villa Medici’s apartments. They were renovated in 2023 by designer India Mahdavi. The rooms are decorated with Renaissance frescoes, works of painter Jacopo Zucchi and his atelier, as well as wall cladding and furniture imagined by painter Balthus in the 1960s. They are comfortable rooms of about 70 m2, equipped with a double bed and a bathroom with a bathtub, with a view either on the city of Rome or on Villa Medici’s gardens.

Classic rooms

The classic rooms are former flats for artists in residence. They overlook the Villa Medici gardens and the Trinità dei Monti convent. They are mini-apartments of about 40 m2, comfortable, with a living room, bathroom with shower, and a loft with a double bed.

How to book a room

Reservation s must be sent no later than 2 months before the desired date of stay. Reservations can be made from Monday to Friday (9:30 am – 3:30 pm) by e-mail at the following address: [email protected] indicating the type of room you are interested in (historical or classic) and the dates for which you wish to book. We will do our best to reply within 48 hours of your request and, taking into account unforeseen events related to Villa Medici’s artistic activities, a room corresponding to your request will be reserved for you.

Villa Medici is a historical monument where restoration works can be carried out at any time. We apologise that the works’ schedule may change and in some cases the result might be the unexpected cancellation of the bookings with a very short notice.

Please be informed that there is no elevator to reach the rooms but a stone stairs. The gateway rooms are each served by a wooden gateway which runs alongside the building on the 4th floor. Each room has a private bathroom, with a shower or a bathtub. No food or drinks can be ordered in the rooms. Breakfast is not included in the price of the room, however, guests staying at the Villa can benefit from the sale of croissants and coffee from Monday to Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 am (internal service reserved for guests at the Villa, artists in residence and members of the Academy team).

The reception is opened from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm from Monday to Saturday, and from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm on Sunday. Luggage is not delivered in the rooms. Prior to departure, luggages can be left in the reception but we decline any responsibility in case of loss or theft of your personal belongings.

The French Academy in Rome organises various cultural events opened to the public throughout the year (conferences, concerts, festivals, exhibitions), as well as guided tours of the gardens for which you need to book a ticket in advance. We would like to inform you that these cultural events can cause noise disturbance late at night. We kindly ask you to excuse us in this particular circumstances.
