Cinemondo
From 21 to 26 November , the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici is presenting the third edition of the Cinemondo Festival . This year, the program focuses on the Mediterranean, with a particular attention devoted to the cinema of Maghreb . The event will provide a rostrum for authors and films from Algeria , Morocco and Tunisia by means of a foray into the current films in these territories, known in Arabic as “the land of sunset”. This year again, the Cinemondo Festival is giving carte blanche to a local institution particularly noteworthy for the originality and quality of its activities. This year Villa Medici has invited the prestigious Cinémathèque de Tanger , which will reveal the treasures of its archives. Created in 2006 by Franco-Moroccan artist Yto Barrada, the Cinémathèque de Tanger is an institution of vital importance for the cinema in Morocco, as well as being an important platform for cultural exchange. The homage to the Cinémathèque de Tanger will be supplemented by the Panorama sector, which offers an insight into the current trends of the Maghreb cinema by presenting a selection of titles acclaimed and awarded prizes by international. Once again there is an appointment with documentary films in the SpazioDoc section, curated by CineAgenzia , which will present themes that are strictly linked to current events. Each title in the program bears witness to the political and social stories of everyday life. The wealth and formal diversity of the films reveals a subtle and attentive analysis of the events of today. Within this dialogue of cinematographic styles and forms, the Cinemondo Festival will also present two of the most important films by acclaimed Algerian director Tariq Teguia : Roma wa la n’touma (2006) and Gabbla (2008). Teguia has been invited by Nora Martirosyan, the screenwriter and director who is presently a fellow at Villa Medici. In addition, in one of the most suggestive locations of Villa Medici, the audience will have the opportunity of discovering some of the most prominent directors of the Maghreb area within the SpazioOff section, thanks to agnès b. presenting the works of artists who have enriched the contemporary scene.
