ECCO, an experimental journal initiated by the Villa Medici fellows
ECCO is an online journal imagined by the sixteen fellows of the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici. From September 2021 to August 2021, they participate in an annual residency of creation, experimentation and research. This initiative was born out of a desire to create a link between their practices, a project amplified by a context of health crisis marked by the closure of cultural venues and the suspension of projects. A creative antidote to resignation imagined in a free and experimental form.
This hybrid digital object is presented as a monthly journal: from January to July 2021, seven issues will feature contributions from authors, poets, artists, musicians, architects, researchers in residence or visiting the Villa, as well as guests from a variety of backgrounds, including several former Villa Medici residents. Each one responds as he or she wishes, alone or with others, to a raw word that evokes a sound and/or a form as a pretext for reflection. Hole, Bang, Flat, Peak, Edge, Block, Rift: seven words for seven numbers that play with double meanings and resonate in a plurality of artistic languages . Videos, texts, sound creations, photographs, drawings… each contribution seizes the word and dissects the imaginary that the word carries.
The residents’ magazine is a way to make their residence work known to the public, to represent in digital form the laboratory of ideas of which the Villa Medici is the framework. Contributors and readers come together in the same curiosity for contemporary words and forms. The initiative leaves plenty of room for the unexpected and announces other meetings with the public, including the collective exhibition of the Villa’s fellows planned for this summer at the French Academy.
