Medici Residency

with the CNRS

In 2023, the Villa Medici – French Academy in Rome and the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) decided to establish a residency allowing CNRS researchers to be hosted at Villa Medici.

For the CNRS, this collaboration is part of a context in which research, the arts and creation are mutually nourished by diversified, multidisciplinary approaches. These approaches range from research into the aesthetic and historical aspects of works to their mediation and use, via analyses of their material and immaterial dimensions.

In order to implement this collaboration, it is envisaged that up to two projects per year may be selected in the field(s) of ‘Research, Arts and Creative Arts’.

Residency requirements

  • The duration of the residency at Villa Medici is between 1 and 4 months, to be taken during 2027.
  • For the duration of their stay, researchers remain paid by the CNRS, and retain their original status, particularly as regards promotion and retirement.
  • The researcher’s home institution will provide the necessary facilities for their work.
  • The actual dates of the stay are set by Villa Medici depending on its accommodation availability.
  • Villa Medici agrees to provide researchers with accommodation and a workspace, which may be shared, and to give them access to the library and the various communal areas available to Villa Medici residents (cafeteria, garden, residents’ lounge, etc.).
  • Villa Medici’s internal regulations apply to these researchers.
  • Residents may not host external guests in their accommodation, unless prior permission has been requested and granted by the Academy.
  • Any publication concerning research carried out by CNRS researchers during their stay at the Villa Medici must bear the statement ‘project/publication produced as part of the CNRS/Villa Medici residency’.
