Since 2010, the Institut national d’histoire de l’art (INHA) and the French Aademy in Rome – Villa Medici have been awarding two scholarships each year for research into art from the Renaissance to the present day.
These scholarships are intended for established French or foreign researchers wishing to travel to Rome to carry out research.

Candidates must either have held a doctorate for at least 5 years by the closing date of the call, or be curators or have recognized professional experience in a field of art history.
The grant amounts to €3,000. Fellows are housed at Villa Médicis for a period of four to six weeks, consecutively or divided between January 1 and December 31 of the same 2026, with the exception of the month of August.
Successful candidates must send an activity report of no more than two pages to the Director General of INHA and the Director of the Art History Department of the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici, in electronic format, within three months of the end of their stay.
The selection committee is made up of the General Director of the INHA, the Director of the French Academy in Rome, the Director of the INHA Studies and Research Department, the Director of the Art History Department at the French Academy in Rome, and an outside personality. The committee meets once a year to select the winners for the following year.
Application files for the 2026 selection must be submitted via the INHA application platform, with a copy sent to the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici (by email only, to [email protected]) no later than September 30, 2025, at midnight.
The application file must include:
1. A cover letter addressed to the General Director of the INHA and to the General Director of the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici.
2. A curriculum vitae.
3. A detailed work plan (maximum 4 pages) written in French, Italian, or English, including:
a general presentation of the research;
a rationale explaining the need for the candidate’s presence in Rome in relation to their research topic;
the research institutions where the documentation and archives to be consulted are located.
4. The completed information form attached.
