Medici Residency

Throughout the year, the French Academy in Rome welcomes artists, authors and researchers from all disciplines to carry out a specific creative or research project as part of the “Medici Residency” program. These residencies are not part of the annual residents’ competition. These residencies last from 2 weeks to 2 months, and are designed to carry out a specific research or creative project.

Residency requirements

Selection conditions

Applications may be submitted for all creative disciplines, arts and crafts, as well as art history and theory, and art and monument restoration. Candidates must be French-speaking. Candidates must be over eighteen years of age on the closing date for applications. Group applications are permitted. Applications are examined in one or two sessions per year.

A selection committee chaired by the Academy’s Director examines all applications, deliberates and decides on the list of successful candidates, as well as the duration of the residency awarded to them. Successful applicants will receive a reply by e-mail within three months of the closing date of the call for applications.

Reception conditions

The dates of the residents’ actual stay are set by the Academy Director. In the event of refusal of these dates by the selected candidate, the latter may lose the benefit of the residency. Between these dates, residents must be present at the Villa Medici. The terms and conditions of residency are set out in a residency contract between the Academy and the resident. To enable them to carry out their creative, research or experimental activities, the Academy pays each resident a monthly grant of €1,500 gross, prorated for the duration of the residency. Each resident is offered a single room in shared accommodation for the duration of his or her stay. Transportation to and from the residence is the responsibility of the resident.
