Open call fellows annual selection

Each year, the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici organizes an international competition to select fellows who will be hosted at the Villa Medici in Rome for a 12-month residency in creation, experimentation and research (residency begins in September, ends in August). The competition is open to established French-speaking artists, authors and researchers, regardless of nationality. Applications are accepted from all disciplines of literary and artistic creation, arts and crafts, as well as art history and theory, or the restoration of works of art or monuments.


Selection conditions

Before you apply

  • Candidates may submit only one application per competition.
  • Candidates must be over eighteen years of age on the closing date for applications.
  • Candidates must speak French, regardless of nationality. They are also advised to have some knowledge of Italian language and culture.
  • The selection process is aimed at people who are already working.
  • Applicants must submit a detailed project outlining their research topics, the nature of their work and the reasons for their stay.
  • Applicants may submit a group project. In this case, each person selected will receive a residency grant.
  • Candidates must not have been boarders.

The jury

Each candidate’s file is examined by a jury made up of the following members: the Director of the French Academy in Rome, who chairs the jury; the Director General of Artistic Creation or his appointed representative; and six qualified personalities appointed by decision of the Director of the Academy.

Application

  • Application form to be completed on the competition’s online platform ;
  • Copy of both sides of the applicant’s valid identity card or passport;
  • Detailed curriculum vitae, written in French, showing artistic career, diplomas obtained, awards and grants already received, publications and residencies completed;
  • Detailed project formulated in a typed note in French, saved in PDF format, not exceeding 10 pages and 2 MB and indicating the reasons for the stay, the research topics and the nature of the work that the candidate wishes to carry out during his stay;
  • Artistic documentation/portfolio or publications: copies of articles, extracts from dissertations, photographs or documentation images (maximum 15 images), compressed video or sound files, manuscript fragments (maximum 2). In the case of collaborative works, the candidate’s creative contribution must be clearly indicated. Hyperlinks to video or audio files or web pages may also be included. In the case of collaborative works, the candidate’s creative contribution must appear clearly. All these elements must be assembled in a single PDF document.
