Whole classes of secondary school students pose happily and proudly in the gardens of Villa Medici: images that sum up the spirit of Résidence Pro for young people from vocational schools. Established in 2022 by Villa Medici, Résidence Pro is aimed at enhancing the excellence of French vocational and agricultural schools.

Each year, Résidence Pro collaborates with different regions to focus on a skill sector which then becomes the common thread for a thorough exploration of its technical, social, artisan and artistic aspects. This educational program is specifically related to the skills developed in vocational courses, and showcases the talents of high school students and the teaching teams that support them.

Structured over a full school year, Résidence Pro is divided into three phases

From September to May, prepare and build

From the start of the school year, with the support of the project’s teaching teams and a specially-designed digital resource platform, each class conceives and documents a collective work inspired by some aspect of Rome’s great heritage.

In May, travel and experiment

The 300 young people spend a week in the Italian capital, with the Villa Medici as the headquarters for a program of workshops, lectures and hands-on experience. The program is supervised by mediators and led by professionals: journalists, art historians, artists, entrepreneurs and experts. Their stay of a few days in an institution like Villa Medici, which hosts artists in residence from all disciplines, also encourages students to embrace the artistic and cultural world. It’s a week of discovery, good times and exchange. During their field trips, the students visit some of the Roman sites they studied during the year, take part in workshops and meetings with professionals, and enjoy socializing over that week.

On the trip back, sharing

The students then share their visions and experiences and become mediators, producing a capsule, a collective audio-visual map of Rome, filled with each group’s experiences and skills. They then organize a way to share their experience in the form of their choice. Screenings, tastings, concerts, workshops: each class draws up a program for a special event to be organized in their own school.

The Résidence Pro program is not open to applications and is aimed at young people from the partner regions.

Villa Medici launched the first edition of its Résidence Pro program, welcoming 300 high school students from the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and the Région Académique Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The students created collective works inspired by the Roman heritage.

Also collaborating was an active network of public and private partners in the forestry and timber industry, brought together under the Woodrise ecosystem. This first edition showcased the forestry and timber industry, from cabinetmaking to forestry and timber construction, and involved more than 300 students from 15 vocational high schools, representing the diversity of the Nouvelle Aquitaine regions.
