Sanctuary to the masterpieces of Antiquity, heart of Renaissance innovations, rival of France during the Grand siècle, Italy became the homeland of the Grand Tour, the path to the Orient, a welcoming land for artists in search of prodigious enlightenment, or nostalgic for classical grandeur. It has been traveled, dreamed of and fantasized about by many artists. Its landscape appears alternately as a memory, a recomposition or a protagonist (in the cinema of Antonioni or Fellini, for example). From the fantasy of the ideal Italy or, on the contrary, the image of malavita, allegory or caricature, to celebration or monument (during the Risorgimento), Italy(s) are many and varied. Studiolo has put together a dossier that examines some of these visions and mythologies, fantasies and artistic representations of Italy, from the Renaissance to the present day. The next issue of Studiolo will be devoted to the theme of change of scenery and will be out at the end of 2016.
