Studiolo 10 (2013) pays tribute to Daniel Arasse in two ways: it devotes its special issue to a theme close to his heart, the Annunciation, and publishes the previously unpublished paper he gave in Florence in 1986, at the symposium “L’Annunciazione in Toscana nel Rinascimento” organized at the Institut français de Florence in collaboration with The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies at Villa I Tatti. Open to the most up-to-date research in art history, Studiolo focuses on exchanges, transfers and the interplay of influences in the arts between Italy and other nations, primarily France, from the Renaissance to the present day. The publication of texts in four languages (French, Italian, English and German) and the choice of authors, who come from all horizons – researchers, academics, art school teachers, curators, art critics, independent curators – reflect a strong desire to cross approaches and methods. This volume inaugurates a new section, champ libre , which gives a voice and opens its pages, for the first time in Studiolo , to the artists boarding at the Académie de France in Rome – Villa Médicis. In each issue, they will be invited to propose their own interpretation of the thematic dossier. This year, seven of them – resident artists, filmmakers, writers and designers – have chosen to publish works in progress or unpublished works on the theme of the Annunciation, in homage to Daniel Arasse. Studiolo echoes the singular alchemy of Villa Medici, where contemporary creation and art history are mutually nourishing.
