This publication is on sale at the Villa Medici gift store.
The catalog accompanies the exhibition “Collection. 150 photographs from the Bachelot collection”. Published to coincide with Sam Stourzdé’s exhibition at Villa Medici, it focuses on two major transatlantic traditions: French humanist photography and early 20th-century American street photography. The presence of numerous vintage prints by Saul Leiter, with the transition to color, testifies to a shift towards the second half of the century and a reversal of photographic influences. Finally, we explore the beginnings of modern reportage with Gilles Caron, through to the documentary portraits of contemporary photographers such as Laura Henno. A leitmotif of the Collection is the power of these exceptional images to bear witness to a world in evolution, in crisis, prey to constant social and moral questioning. However, the Collection does not stand still in this idea, and is above all open to encounters with artists and their work. For example, the exhibition gives pride of place to Saul Leiter, whose work is above all a magnificent pictorial quest rather than a moral plea.
