As summer approaches, the traditional Villa Medici fellows’ exhibition returns. Curated by Saverio Verini, the project brings together the proposals developed by the sixteen fellows over nearly a year of research in Rome.
The title of the exhibition, Una linea storta tesa (“A twisted, taut line”), evokes the fellows’ residency path: a trajectory at once linear and sinuous, made up of convictions and questionings, a thread constantly alive, taut and exalted. Throughout the year of residency at Villa Medici, the artists’ research takes unexpected paths dotted with discoveries, encounters and evolutions that testify to the vitality of this experience. The exhibition is therefore not a restitution of their projects, but rather a reflection of their progress. The title suggests a paradoxical image, difficult to visualize, which reflects the complexity of the proposals that make up the exhibition itinerary.
A constellation of interventions, including art installations, performances, literature, historical research, video, photography and music, highlights the different directions taken by the fellows: from an interest in landscape and its transformations to reflections on feminisms, from the affective and historical potential of objects to the relationship with Rome and the spaces of Villa Medici, which often serve as the backdrop for the fellows’ creations. These are just some of the themes that emerge from the exhibition’s various proposals, presented in a rhythm that highlights the affinities and divergences between the contributions.
As the exhibition progresses, Villa Medici fellows will be offering readings, happenings and performances in the exhibition rooms.
