Since 2024, Villa Medici has been honoring its Baroque music program, which this year will run from January to December 2025, following the rhythm of the seasons. This “Spring” concert is the second in this cycle.

The appointment with the Baroque Seasons at Villa Medici presents a monographic concert dedicated to some of the most engaging works by Claudio Monteverdi.

In various formations, from solo voice to six-part polyphony, the Musical Chapel of Villa Medici, conducted by Riccardo Martinini, will perform in the first part of the concert the texts of Renaissance and Baroque poets set to music by Monteverdi, dedicated to the arrival of Spring, the depiction of Nature, the joy and contrasts of new love, and the emerging characters from the Operas L’Incoronazione di Poppea and Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria.

The five-voice Madrigals are taken from the Fourth Book, published in Venice by the publisher Ricciardo Amadino in 1603 and considered among the most fascinating. In these works, Monteverdi continues his expressive innovation and search for innovative techniques in polyphony that had never been attempted before, as well as the gradual use of basso continuo, which would become a mainstay in his later works.

In the second part, the Musical Chapel will tackle the sublime spirituality of the Magnificat, published in 1610 alongside the Vespro della Beata Vergine, composed over Gregorian chant themes, in the version for six voices and basso continuo.

These concerts, conceived by Villa Medici and Riccardo Martinini, are also an opportunity to bring together excellent musicians in a Chapelle Musicale linked to the activities of Villa Medici.
