Villa Medici, in collaboration with Mezzo TV, is delighted to welcome internationally-renowned, multi-award-winning jazz pianist Baptiste Trotignon to the exceptional Bosco terrace. A major figure on the international scene, his virtuoso playing, nourished by eclectic influences, is part of a tradition of excellence.
He will take over this unique venue for an open-air concert, in the spellbinding atmosphere of the Roman skyline and summer evenings. Offering a breathtaking view of the Eternal City, the Bosco terrace is a rare setting for this jazz rendezvous under the skies of Rome.
For the occasion, he’ll be joined by a surprise guest, also a key figure on the European jazz scene, for an inspired, collaborative musical dialogue.
Baptiste Trotignon studied piano and classical music from the age of six, and discovered jazz and improvisation as a teenager. His first two trio albums in the early 2000s (followed by two solo piano albums to great public and critical acclaim) revealed him as one of the most spectacular pianists of the new generation, and opened the doors to all the major French and international festivals.
He has won numerous awards: Django Reinhardt Prize, Révelation Française 2003 Victoires du Jazz, Grand Prix du Concours International Martial Solal in 2002.
In the years that followed, he made a host of eclectic encounters, playing alongside artists such as Tom Harrell, Stefano Di Battista, Aldo Romano and Brad Mehldau. After his first “American” album, recorded in New York in 2008 (“Share”), he received the Grand Prix de la Sacem in 2011 for his work as a composer, before releasing an astonishing and audacious album in 2012, “Song Song Song”, in which he evokes his love of the voice and invites great artists such as Melody Gardot and Christophe Miossec. At the same time, he wrote his first major orchestral work, “Different spaces” (a piano concerto premiered by Nicholas Angelich).
In 2014, the young 40-year-old, described by “Le Monde” as “A lesson, a model, perfection from A to Z”, returned to the art of the trio with “Hit”, where he invited groove master Jeff Ballard.
In 2016, while releasing a totally original project mixing jazz and classical on Kurt Weill with Kate Lindsey (“Thousands of miles”, acclaimed by the “New York Times”), he signed with the prestigious SonyMusic label, first unveiling two stunning albums expressing his love of South American traditions (“Chimichurri” with Argentine Minino Garay and “Ancestral Memories” with Cuban Yosvany Terry).
In 2018, he received the prestigious Echo Jazz Award in Germany in the “International Instrumentalist” category, and premiered his 1st symphonic piece “Hiatus et Turbulences” with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, followed a few months later by his 2nd piece for piano and orchestra “L’air de rien”, a concert in which he also played Mozart’s 1st Concerto for the first time before playing the 9th Concerto “Jeune homme” a little later!
In 2019, his new album “You’ve changed” is released: an acoustic return to solo piano and an incredible series of intimate duets with artists such as Joe Lovano, Avishai Cohen, Ibrahim Maalouf, Camélia Jordana…
After 2 years devoted mainly to orchestral writing (“Move”, a trumpet concerto for Romain Leleu, then “Anima”, his first symphony), in 2023 he signs his return to the Naïve label with “Brexit Music”, a 100% groove trio on an English pop repertoire from the Beatles to Radiohead!
2024 saw the release of 3 albums that encapsulate the pianist-composer’s multi-faceted personality: jazz with “PianoForte”, featuring his long-time pianist friends Eric Legnini, Bojan Z and Pierre De Bethmann; classical music with “Ces Messieurs…”, his 2nd String Quartet written for and recorded by the Van Kuijk Quartet; and a chanson album, “PianoVoix”, recorded as a duet with the inhabited voice of Feu Chatterton singer Arthur Teboul.
Some of the musicians he has played and/or worked with (in alphabetical order):
Jeanne Added, Natalie Dessay, Stefano Di Battista, Avishai Cohen, Melody Gardot, Thomas Enhco, Tom Harrell, Camelia Jordana, Angelique Kidjo, Bireli Lagrène, Joe Lovano, Ibrahim Maalouf, Brad Mehldau, Christophe Miossec, Milton Nascimento, Vincent Peirani, Michel Portal, Enrico Rava, Aldo Romano, Archie Shepp, Arthur Teboul, Alexandre Tharaud, Kenny Wheeler…
