This event is part of I Pomeriggi, a series dedicated to the residents of the Istituto Svizzero. In Motion is curated by Domenico Singha Pedroli (resident in Visual Arts and Cinema at Istituto Svizzero). The event will include a screening and discussion of films by Domenico Singha Pedroli and Ana Vaz (resident at Villa Medici), as well as Eduardo Williams, in the presence of Giona A. Nazzaro (Artistic Director of the Locarno International Film Festival).
The notion of place and the fluidity of its definition represent generative thematic cores for the practices of many filmmakers. In Motion, Crafting places for a multicultural cinematic practice unfolds between screenings of experimental short films and moments of discussion between various filmmakers.
The event offers an opportunity to reflect on the intimate connection between geography and authorial identity, in the context of the hosts’ cinematic practices, and on the technical tools used to narrate the cultural and political complexity of the realities tackled, from 16mm film to the latest 360° cameras.
The event includes the programming of several experimental short films that explore local identities through a post-colonial lens. The works of Brazilian filmmakerAna Vaz, such as APIYEMIYEKI? and É a noite na América, question man’s position within a more complex cosmic system, taking urban centers and archives as their starting point.
Also screening will be the fim Parsi (2018, 22′), by Eduardo Williams.
Domenico Singha Pedroli (Swiss-Thai filmmaker), meanwhile, with his two recent works, in particular the documentary “Au Revoir Siam”, contextualizes the daily lives of Thai political refugees in Paris within a wider temporality, mixing heterogeneous materials such as cartographies, rituals and screenshots.
The discussion will be moderated by Giona A. Nazzaro, Artistic Director of the Locarno Film Festival.
