  • The Secret Sites of Creation

The Secret Sites of Creation is a guided tour focusing on the French Academy in Rome’s vocation since its founding: residencies for artists.
Every Sunday at 3:30 p.m. the tour looks back to the Villa’s establishment in 1666, covers the stays of such famous creative figures as Fragonard, Ingres, Berlioz, Bizet and Debussy, and closes with today’s residencies for international artists and researchers from every field. Recent years have seen the presence of some of the world’s leading creators.
This is a unique opportunity to get to know residents’ work and to visit their haunts, now accessible to the public for the first time. In an ongoing dialogue between past and present the visitor learns the history of the institution, its residents, and the directors who left their stamp on it in the course of the 20th century—among them the painter Balthus, in charge from 1961 to 1977. A tour is offered in French and another in Italian, each lasting about 90 minutes.

    Every Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Tours in Italian and French. About 90 minutes
Fee: 12 € (includes entry to the temporary exhibitions)
    Maximum 20 people
