Profession: Visual artist Adina Mocanu Alexandra and Sand were both born in 1990 and are Romanian. They live and work in Bucharest. After studying fine graphic arts at university, they turned to performative art and are now exploring this area as part of their artistic duo formed in 2013. Their research, particularly interested in the links between their identity as human beings as well as artists, has grown in the context of public space and, more recently, that of the “white cube” (galleries and museums). For them, public space refers not only to urban space, but also to where, all together, the various forms of self-awareness manifest and create a collective awareness. They have participated in significant projects since the formation of their duo, including exhibitions at the MNAC – National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest, artistic residences in Italy and Bulgaria as well as collaborations with alternative spaces dedicated to young artists in Bucharest. Titled
Présence et Utopie (‘Presence and Utopia’), Adina Mocanu Alexandra Sand’s project for Villa Medici aims to unite their interest in body awareness and “self-awareness” on the one hand, and new societies and Man’s immediate reaction to certain contexts on the other. Their research will focus on creating their own future, through both action and “non-action”. To this end, they will use the art of performance as their main means of expression, associated with other media, such as video art. They intend to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of Rome seeking to create links between their own experiences and those left by the resident artists who preceded them.
