Open-air Cinema X – Anna Magnani

From July, 18th to July 22nd 2016 , The French Academy in Rome presents the 10th edition of the Open-air Cinema, which has been dedicated this year to the protagonist of the neorealist cinema and extraordinary actress, Anna Magnani,. Sixty years ago exactly, on May, 21st, 1956, Magnani won the Oscar for her performance in the movie The Rose Tatoo, thereby becoming the first Italian actress becoming part of the Academy Awards History. Her brilliant acting skills and her original lifestyle escaping the conventions of a tumultuous era are the foundations of  her complex character. She was able to combine fragility and strength, melancholia and joyfulness. Her career shows the great determination with which she faced her working environment and the society still dominated by men she was living in. Anna Magnani was born in Rome and obtained a piano degree from the Conservatory. Subsequently, she attended the Royal School of Acting Eleonora Duse, which later became the Academy of Dramatic Arts. Even though her career started as a stage actress, her greatest success was definitely in cinema. Her interpretation in Roma Città Aperta, of Pina the none, turned her into the world-famous emblematic figure of neorealism. Many other roles and characters followed this one and became unforgettable thanks to her looks, her voice, her unmistakable laughs, and most of all the spontaneity of her acting.
