On November 18th and 19th, the École française de Rome and the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici will host a two-day conference, bringing together an international range of researchers from France, Switzerland, Spain, and Belgium: “Couleurs et pigments dans l’art de la Renaissance en Europe” (Colors and pigments in Renaissance art in Europe).


Organized by Francesca Alberti (French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici), Michel Hochman, Guy-Michel Leproux, Audrey Nassieu Maupas (École pratique des Hautes Études, PSL), this conference will be the final event of the “Pictor” project (2017-2021), a comparative study of the painting profession in Europe in the 16th century.

The Pictor project aims to carry out a comparative study of the painting profession in Europe in the 16th century. At a time when work was still largely regulated, examining the conditions for learning and practising painting in different artistic centres, taking into account the mobility of artists, should lead to a better understanding of the art of this period.
