    The so called "Ingres atelier"

The French Academy in Rome was founded in 1666 by Louis XIV.
In the course of the centuries, it has welcomed the greatest French artists and architects, from Fragonard to Ingres, Berlioz, Carpeaux, Bizet, Debussy, Garnier, and more recently, François Rouan, Ange Leccia, Bernard Frize, George Rousse, Pascal Dusapin, Hervé Guibert, Elisabeth Ballet, Yan Pei-Ming...

Decided by André Malraux, the Villa Medici's reform abolished the Price of Rome and entrusted the Ministry of Culture with the guardianship of this institution.

The French Academy in Rome carries out two complementary missions

1 - to offer to French-speaking and French or any other nationalities artists and specialists to improve themselves in their disciplines (« Colbert » mission).

2 - to stimulate the relations and cultural exchanges between France and Italy in a cosmopolitan spirit open up to the world (« Malraux » mission).

The great exhibitions, public concerts, films, conferences carried out in collaboration with Italian public organisations and the contribution of the Villa Medici's fellows, specifically illustrate the Academy's double mission.
